Move your Weebly site to a free host
Last checked: 2026-10-09
This is for Weebly users in the 67 countries where Weebly is winding down services. Weebly's notice says: "You will still have access to your Weebly account until 2026-12-26 to enable you to move your site, domains, and data to another service. After this date, you will no longer have login access to your Weebly account." (Weebly notice)
Weebly says those sites "will be unpublished on 2026-09-27", but you can still rebuild from your files. Not sure if you're affected? See the country list on Weebly alternatives.
Step 1: Get Weebly's site archive
Weebly's help article gives these steps:
- Log in to the site editor and go to Settings > General.
- Scroll down to the Archive section.
- Enter your email address and select Email Archive.
- You'll get an email with a link to download the archive as a ZIP file.
Weebly's notice also gives the path as Website > Edit Site > Settings > Archive.
Download your account data too: Account Settings > My Data > Download My Data (Weebly notice). Weebly lets you ask it to erase your data afterwards. Don't do that until you've finished moving.
Weebly is clear about what the archive leaves out: "Blog and store pages aren't included in the export as they rely directly on our database. Also, some components of your site may not work correctly outside of the Weebly editor, like the Contact Form and Slideshow elements." (Back Up Your Site)
Step 2: Run the free tool
Archive to Static reads the site-archive ZIP in your browser. The tool page says: "Links are rewritten, remote CSS is saved into the download, editor scripts and the platform badge are stripped, and you get a ZIP you can host anywhere."
Your export stays in your browser. To keep your site's look, your browser downloads its public styles and fonts straight from Weebly's servers. Nothing is sent to us.
- Under Drop your archive ZIP, optionally fill in:
- Site domain: "Used to rewrite old site links and to build sitemap.xml. Leave blank to detect a *.weebly.com host from the ZIP."
- Contact email for forms: "Dead forms are replaced with a notice and a mailto link."
- Drop the ZIP on Drop a ZIP here, or choose a file. The tool takes a site-archive ZIP only, up to 800 MiB.
- Download the result ZIP and read the report. The tool page says blog posts and store pages "are listed in the report".
Use the site-archive ZIP, not the "Download My Data" package. The tool page says: "That other layout cannot be turned into a website here."
The two fixes that matter: HTTPS links and theme scripts
When we tested a real 2026 archive (see our export guide), two problems stopped the site from working on a modern host:
- HTTPS links. Weebly pages load shared CSS, fonts and scripts over
http://. Free hosts serve your site over HTTPS, and browsers blockhttp://files on HTTPS pages. MDN explains this as mixed content. - Theme-script paths. Pages ask for
files/theme/plugins.jsandfiles/theme/custom.js, but the ZIP stores them atfiles/theme/files/plugins.jsandfiles/theme/files/custom.js. In that test, the mobile menu only opened after both fixes.
The tool upgrades http:// and protocol-relative links to https://, so browsers don't block those files as mixed content. It does not rewrite files/theme/plugins.js to files/theme/files/plugins.js. Instead it strips those Weebly theme scripts and injects its own mobile-nav wiring so the menu still opens. If you'd rather work by hand, the export guide shows both edits.
Step 3: Deploy
Unzip the result. Upload the folder that has index.html at its top level.
Netlify: log in first
Netlify's docs say: "If you drop without signing in, your project URL is protected with a temporary password until you claim it." (Netlify Drop quickstart)
- Log in at app.netlify.com/login, in the team you want to use.
- Go to app.netlify.com/drop.
- Drag the folder onto the drop zone.
- If the project is private, select Make public. On Netlify's credit-based plans, new projects can start private by default (Project visibility).
Cloudflare Pages: Direct Upload
- In the Cloudflare dashboard, open Workers & Pages.
- Select Create application > Get started > Drag and drop your files.
- Name the project, drag in the folder or ZIP, and select Deploy site. Cloudflare's doc also calls this step Save and Deploy.
Drag and drop allows 1,000 files and 25 MiB per file. Your site appears at <project-name>.pages.dev (Direct Upload).
Your domain
If you bought the domain through Weebly, transfer it before 2026-12-26. Weebly says to turn off Registrar Lock to get the EPP code. It warns that changing registrant contact details "will result in a 60 day registrar lock". It also says country-code domains need its support team (Weebly notice). Then add the domain in your host: Netlify's Domain management (docs) or Cloudflare Pages' Custom domains (docs).
Forms, blog and store: the honest limits
Forms. A Weebly form sends to Weebly, so it can't work on a static host. Export old entries first: Website > Overview > Form Entries, pick a form, then use Export (Weebly: form submissions). Then use a form service or an email link. The tool's mailto replacement is a stopgap.
Blog. Blog posts aren't in the site archive, and the tool can't recover them. Weebly doesn't say whether the Download My Data file includes post text. Look for yourself, and copy posts from the editor while you can still log in.
Store. Store pages aren't in the archive either. Export your items: go to Items > Site Items, click the "..." icon and select Export. Weebly emails you a link to a CSV. Its IMAGE column is "the URL to the item's main image in the Weebly system", so save your product images too (Weebly: CSV import and export). A static host can't run a checkout, and GitHub Pages doesn't allow e-commerce sites (GitHub Pages limits). For a store, see the builders on Weebly alternatives.
Weebly hasn't said what happens to remaining data, hosted images or domains after 2026-12-26. Finish before then.
FAQ
Which Weebly export do I need?
The site archive ZIP, from the site editor under Settings, General, Archive. The free tool can't use the account-level Download My Data package, though you should download that too.
Are my blog posts and store in the site archive?
No. Weebly says blog and store pages aren't included in the export as they rely directly on its database. Export store items as a CSV separately, and copy blog posts while you can still log in.
Why does my moved site look broken or the mobile menu not open?
Weebly pages load shared files over http://, which browsers block on HTTPS hosts, and look for theme scripts at the wrong paths. The free tool upgrades those links to https://, strips the theme scripts, and injects its own mobile-nav wiring. Our export guide shows the manual fix.
Will my contact form work?
No. Weebly says the contact form may not work outside its editor. If you enter a contact email, the tool replaces dead forms with a notice and a mailto link.
Does the free tool send my site anywhere?
Your export stays in your browser. To keep your site's look, your browser downloads its public styles and fonts straight from Weebly's servers. Nothing is sent to us.
Do I need to log in to Netlify first?
Yes. Netlify's docs say that if you drop without signing in, your project URL is protected with a temporary password until you claim it.
